Older Women series (working title) project is expected in August 2012
In this time there are many people who are afraid of getting old. There is a collective fear of decay. We think that decay is irreversible and on a deeper level it affects our identity. A person is essentially not a body but what he inspires

Often because of physical limitations the elderly are often house bound and the world around them becomes limited. In contrast their spiritual world is often very large and they have much life experience and wisdom to offer gained through what life has given them
This Project is about thirteen portraits that illustrate the power and beauty of older women. Sometimes they are disarming or almost childlike. Sometimes the power lies in the wisdom, pride and / or the lust for life that they radiate. They all possess different qualities that I wish to make visible. Making the series is a process of getting to know them. I choose the number 13 as it is the figure for unity. There are also thirteen moon phases in one year and it is also the number of transformation and change, end of the old and start of a new cycle

All the women are clothed in pure white. This lends the series uniformity and because there is little to distract the viewer their individual personalities become more apparent. I was very curious about what I would catch sight of in the women. Each picture was taken with awe and without any preconceived ideas. I tried to capture in each portrait emotions or wonder that would act as a mirror for the observer.

Besides the portraits that I have made, I also asked the women to write on small pieces papers words and phrases that had meaning to them. These may be secrets but could also be desires, important events or just small details about their lives.
With each photograph there is also a piece of music created especially. This music is going to be made by various professional dutch musicians, composers and sound-artists The photographs as well as the words from the women are used to inspire the making of each piece of music
As the viewer studies each photograph he or she will receive a virtual shower of specially composed music that will come from a cap that hangs from the ceiling. The image and sound creates a link with each other and the surroundings and with the observe creating a much more intense sound and visual experience.

In deze tijd zijn veel mensen bang om ouder te worden. Er heerst een collectieve angst voor verval. We denken dat verval onomkeerbaar is en op een dieper niveau de eigen identiteit zal aantasten. Een mens is in wezen niet zijn lichaam maar dát wat hem doet begeesteren.
Dit Project is een project waarin ik dertien oudere vrouwen portretteer en de kracht en schoonheid van deze vrouwen wil laten zien. Soms zijn ze ontwapenend of bijna kinderlijk, soms schuilt de kracht in de wijsheid, trots en/of levenslust die ze uitstralen. Allen bezitten ze een andere kwaliteit die ik zichtbaar wil maken. Het maken van de serie is een proces. Ik weet nog niet wanneer ik al de dertien vrouwen heb. Ik kom ze tegen en ontmoet ze. Het feit dat het er dertien moeten worden bepaal ik intuïtief. (het is een getal van eenheid, de 13 maanfases in een jaar. getal van transformatie en verandering, einde van het oude en begin van een nieuwe cyclus)

Door de vrouwen zich in het wit te laten kleden krijgt de serie uniformiteit. Er is weinig afleiding en zo kan hun persoonlijkheid goed naar voren komen. Mijn nieuwsgierigheid naar wat ik te zien krijg van de vrouwen staat voorop. Vanuit verwondering en gedachteloosheid probeer ik dat moment te pakken wat tot ontroering of verwondering stemt en een spiegel kan vormen voor de toeschouwer.

Naast dat ik een portret van ze maak laat ik ook de vrouwen op kleine papiertjes woorden en zinnen schrijven. Dit kunnen geheimen zijn maar ook verlangens, belangrijke gebeurtenissen of kleine details van hun leven. Aan elke foto ga ik een muziekstuk koppelen. Deze worden gemaakt door verschillende professionele muzikanten, componisten en geluidskunstenaars die ik één van de foto’s van de vrouwen voorleg om iets op of voor te maken. De uiteindelijke vorm is nog in ontwikkeling, maar klank en woord zullen interactief onderdeel worden van deze serie.
