Toen ik voor het eerst in haar atelier kwam viel me deze ketting gelijk op. Jaren later lag de ketting nog steeds in haar atelier en was nog steeds niet verkocht, heel vreemd vond ik; zo’n mooie ketting. Tijdens een verkoopweekend in haar atelier met werk van haar, van mij en nog een paar collega kunstenaars werd de ketting verkocht, "eindelijk", zei ik, dat werd tijd dat de ketting voor iemand zou zijn. Talke vertelde me een paar weken later dat de ketting weer terug was, “hoezo”? zei ik ,”de vrouw vond hem geweldig”. “Stond niet bij de jurk”, zei Talke .”ze wilde liever iets blauws, dus heb ik een ketting gemaakt van zilver met blauw.” En weer lag de rode pepercollier terug in de vitrine te wachten op de vrouw die haar zou dragen. Toen Talke december vorig jaar me onderstaande brief stuurde wist ik waarom de rode pepercollier niet was verkocht. Het lot van de pepercollier is die van een reizende pepercollier. Een geluksbrenger, een bezegeling van vriendschap, van ontvangen en (door)geven. Deze vrouwen, en draagsters van de ketting, wil ik portretteren. Reizende Rode Pepercollier Dit zilveren collier door mij gemaakt wil ik in 2012 laten reizen! Dit sieraad heeft rode pepers (van glas) welke ook wel als amulet gebruikt worden ter bescherming tegen het Boze Oog of als geluksbrenger. Gokkers wrijven erover voor ze wedden. Koks zorgen ervoor dat er een in de keuken hangt, zodat ze succes hebben bij het bereiden van de maaltijden. Autobestuurders hangen ze op in hun auto’s om zich te beschermen tegen verkeersongelukken. Zelfs serieuze zakenlieden gebruiken ze soms als ze een ‘deal’ gaan afsluiten. De bedoeling is dat dit collier elke maand door iemand anders gedragen wordt, en steeds wordt doorgegeven. When I first entered her studio, I immediately noticed this necklace. Years later, that necklace was still in her jeweleryshop and it still wasn't sold, which was odd to me, such a beautiful necklace. During a sales weekend at her workspace with work of her, myself and some other artists, it was sold. “Finally” I said, it was about time that that necklace found a home. A few weeks later, Talke told me that she had the necklace back. “Why?” I asked her. “It didn't match her dress, she preferred to have something blue, so I made her a blue and silver necklace.” Talke told me. And yet again the red pepper necklace was back in the showcase, waiting for a woman to wear it. When Talke sent me the letter written below, december last year, I knew why the red pepper necklace wasn't sold. the destiny of this necklace is that of a traveler. A bringer of fortunes, a seal of friendship, of receiving and giving. These women, the ones who wear the necklace, I want to portray. 
Traveling Red Pepper necklace This Silver necklace was made by me and I want it to travel in 2012! This piece of jewelry has red peppers (made of glass) and they are also used as an amulet of protection against the Evil Eye or as a bringer of fortune. Gamblers rub them before they place a bet. Chef's make sure that there is one in the kitchen, so they will have success in cooking a meal. Car drivers put them on their car for protection agains't traffic accidents. Even serious businessmen sometimes use them when making a “deal”. It's the intention that this necklace is worn by someone different every month and it has to be passed on. I let the audience take part and be a part of the artwork and I try to break through the existing behaviour and expectations. The boundaries of the artwork disappear and therefore it is more of an experience and it has a connection with time and space. 
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2012 MAGIE/MAGIC The audience of the culture night got a pinhole box (offered by Rabobank Breda, main sponsor of the Cultural night 2012) and with that box they could take a photo, during the Cultural night.The exposure time was a minimum of 20 minutes, so it became more a reflection of an experience, than that of a moment. The paper in the pinhole boxes were developed during that night and people were able to view the results at Lighthouse Studio. <img Click on the image to start the video. It was played intuitive by Lerant van de Rakt, Fred Bouwer and Cecile Aanraad. The first two photo's of my series “Elderly Women” were projected. During the projection, there was live music and the audience got the chance to play along (the instruments were those that didn't need any musical knowledge, so everyone could join). Halfway the projection, people could take a note where a “secret” was written on it. The women on the photo's had made several notes where they put their secrets and desires on. There is Marre at four, eight, and twelve years of age, and Nina at eleven, fifeteen, and nineteen years of age. In 2003, the first portraits in this series were shown at the International Photo Festival, “Breda Photo.” Nina’s photograph, at eleven years of age, appeared on the Festival’s poster. The series, now completed, provides insight as children are transformed from childhood to adolescence to young women. It is the natural curiosity related to a child’s development as she matures. In four years, is the appearance the same or completely changed? Sometimes the child is still evident in the young woman. Sometimes adolescence occurs at the age of nine. The girls mature and become self-conscious. Much is gained, but you also see the naivety that is lost. My motivation to follow these children emanates from her own personal transformation. I was pregnant with my daughter Mila when I first photographed the girls. Mila died a few hours after birth. In my own daughter’s absence, I developed a strong attachment to these girls and, after several years, decided to photographically record their growth. "I AM A GIRL" PUBLICATION In the introduction I dedicate the book to my daughter Mila and the book also contains an essay “The eyebrow of Felicia” about “A portrait” written by Sacha Bronwasser who is an Art historian and Art journalist for ‘De Volkskrant” and author of "Zo Werken Wij” – ten portraits of extraordinary artists. She brings up a beautiful photograph on to the screen. Although Faroesjka (14) was shy at the beginning of the project ‘Het Dossier” (The File) she was able to say that she found the two photo-style artwork hanging at the BAS ( Business Art Service) were beautiful to her. “There was going to be a photograph that was relatively clear” continues Claudette “but how it was going to turn out was another thing!” To begin with Faroesjka had made a mood storyboard. She had placed a photograph of working African children because she felt guilty that she had such a good life. The picture of the queen gave the feeling that she felt spoilt. Claudette: “ Faroesjka’s mood board was very telling and the pictures of a horse, a computer, all kinds of expensive labels and a beautiful sand landscape indicated the direction that the finished photograph would take.” Next to these pictures from magazines was a beautiful red ribbon. “Faroesjka told me that she love horse riding and that gave me the idea to photograph her in a situation where she felt happiest and where she always wants to be” The mood board was left as it was and Faroesjka was given a camera to take home. She made photographs from everyday things that she did. Claudette then choose 10 of the most striking and made a collage out of them. Yet in the end this was not needed. During the sessions Faroesjka talked about her problems such as why she did not live at home and over questions that she had. But she also spoke about friends, family, her own insecurities and her hope that soon her life was going to be better. “I was extremely touched by her openness and I could completely empathize with her. Puberty is not really a period that I would like to go back to.” Discloses Claudette candidly “I want a sunset” declares Faroesjka resolutely when asked for the time of a meeting. And she wants to wear red trousers and a red bag and Claudette added a red ribbon. “Although I would like to go to Strijbeekse heide” Faroesjka found the place not beautiful enough. She just wanted to have a background with sand and no grass or heath. “I had thought that I might have to use photoshop however it was not needed” utters Claudette relieved French was the name of the horse chosen but the animal was not allowed to be transported. This meant that the photograph would have to be made at the riding school. ”Yet we got our sunset as the Saturday had beautiful weather.” The composition of the photograph is from Claudette however the theme of the photograph is Faroesjkas’: The horse, the setting sun, the colour red, the ribbon, the green eyes. “We completely forgot about the red bag, however we did not miss it on the picture. I found this project far more fun than I had expected” said Claudette finally. “Because Faroesjka was so open, so was I. There is Marre at four, eight, and twelve years of age, and Esmeralda at ten, fourteen, and eighteen years of age. In 2003, the first portraits in this series were shown at the International Photo Festival, “Breda Photo.” Nina’s photograph, at eleven years of age, appeared on the Festival’s poster. The twelve girls photographed matured in a new century, experiencing the increasing importance of women in today’s society, and, at the same time, experiencing near impossible demands on their appearances and aspirations. The girls decided how they would appear in these photos. They were influenced by friends, other cultures, My Space, and MTV, although their appearance is a personal choice. They are wearing their favorite clothes. They chose the background color. They requested special considerations such as, “Can you make sure that you don’t see my braces?” Or, “Can I wear lipstick?” Claudette agreed to all these requests, realizing that these are important factors as each girl determines her individual identity. Claudette’s motivation to follow these children emanates from her own personal transformation. She was pregnant with her daughter Mila when she first photographed the girls. Mila died a few hours after birth. In her own daughter’s absence, Claudette developed a strong attachment to these girls and, after several years, decided to photographically record their growth. The series, now completed, provides insight as children are transformed from childhood to adolescence to young women. Claudette’s personal experience is universal. It is the natural curiosity related to a child’s development as she matures. In four years, is the appearance the same or completely changed? Sometimes the child is still evident in the young woman. Sometimes adolescence occurs at the age of nine. The girls mature and become self-conscious. Much is gained, but you also see the naivety that is lost. Three photographs of the same person at different stages during the process of maturing invite you to look back and forth. These comparisons will surprise you. At each stage, you will see the children’s pride in determining how they should be photographed. As the viewer, you interpret for yourself the transformation process. Maar ook Esmeralda als ze 10, 14 en 18 jaar is. In 2003 is de eerste serie getoond op Internationaal foto festival Breda Photo. De 11-jarige Nina werd campagnebeeld van de manifestatie. De 12 meiden groeien op in een nieuwe eeuw. De positie van vrouwen wordt steeds sterker (de samenleving ‘feminiseert’) en tegelijkertijd worden er bijna onhaalbare eisen gesteld aan het uiterlijk en ambities van meisjes. Deze 3 maal 12 portretten gaan niet mee in de publicitaire paniek die hierdoor de afgelopen jaren veroorzaakt werd. Hoe de meisjes op de foto staan is mede hun eigen keuze. Natuurlijk gekruid met invloeden van buitenaf; van vriendinnen en van de straat tot Hyves en TMF. Ze dragen hun lievelingskleren, kozen de kleur van de achtergrond en mochten nog een ander verzoek doen, zoals “Kun je ervoor zorgen dat je mijn beugel niet gaat zien?” of “Mag ik lippenstift op?” Deze keuzes heeft Claudette hen bewust laten maken deze keuzes bepalen mede hun identiteit en zijn interessant in het tijdsverloop van steeds 4 jaar. Ze staan op de foto zoals zij zichzelf willen laten zien. haar motivatie om deze kinderen te volgen komt voort uit een persoonlijke transformatie. De eerste keer heeft zij de kinderen gefotografeerd terwijl ze zwanger was van haar dochtertje Mila. Nadat Mila na haar geboorte overleed raakten de ‘ meiden’ verbonden met haar. Na een aantal jaren besloot ze ze te gaan volgen in de tijd, om ze te zien opgroeien. haar persoonlijke ervaring maakt ze publiek. Het is iets universeels: de nieuwsgierigheid naar hoe een kind groeit en verandert. Heeft een meisje vier jaar later nog dezelfde uitstraling, of komt er een ander gezicht tevoorschijn? Soms zit het kind nog duidelijk in de jonge vrouw, soms kondigt een puber zich juist al op negenjarige leeftijd aan. De meisjes groeien en worden zelfbewust. Er wordt iets gewonnen, maar je ziet ook de onbevangenheid die verloren gaat. De serie, die nu afgerond is, geeft inzicht in een periode waarin de kinderen zich transformeren van kind naar puber tot jonge vrouw. Steeds drie foto’s van dezelfde persoon nodigen uit tot heen en weer kijken, vergelijken en je verbazen. Mijn vriend en ik keken elkaar aan hè hoe kan de rolstoel nu Aron heten. Deze vooraankondiging gaf ons vertrouwen. ENG 2: Announcement of birth On way to the delivery room in the “Amphia” I sat in a wheelchair with the letters ARON on it (what would be the name of our child if it would be a boy). A lorry of bakery “Evers” (what would be his last name) stops in front of the entrance. My partner and I looked at each other: “huh? I was very curious about what I would catch sight of in the women. Each picture was taken with awe and without any preconceived ideas. I tried to capture in each portrait emotions or wonder that would act as a mirror for the observer. Besides the portraits that I have made, I also asked the women to write on small pieces papers words and phrases that had meaning to them. These may be secrets but could also be desires, important events or just small details about their lives. With each photograph there is also a piece of music created especially. This music is going to be made by various professional dutch musicians, composers and sound-artists The photographs as well as the words from the women are used to inspire the making of each piece of music As the viewer studies each photograph he or she will receive a virtual shower of specially composed music that will come from a cap that hangs from the ceiling. The image and sound creates a link with each other and the surroundings and with the observe creating a much more intense sound and visual experience. NL In deze tijd zijn veel mensen bang om ouder te worden. Er heerst een collectieve angst voor verval. We denken dat verval onomkeerbaar is en op een dieper niveau de eigen identiteit zal aantasten. Een mens is in wezen niet zijn lichaam maar dát wat hem doet begeesteren. Dit Project is een project waarin ik dertien oudere vrouwen portretteer en de kracht en schoonheid van deze vrouwen wil laten zien. Soms zijn ze ontwapenend of bijna kinderlijk, soms schuilt de kracht in de wijsheid, trots en/of levenslust die ze uitstralen. Allen bezitten ze een andere kwaliteit die ik zichtbaar wil maken. Het maken van de serie is een proces. Ik weet nog niet wanneer ik al de dertien vrouwen heb. Ik kom ze tegen en ontmoet ze. Het feit dat het er dertien moeten worden bepaal ik intuïtief. (het is een getal van eenheid, de 13 maanfases in een jaar. getal van transformatie en verandering, einde van het oude en begin van een nieuwe cyclus) Door de vrouwen zich in het wit te laten kleden krijgt de serie uniformiteit. Er is weinig afleiding en zo kan hun persoonlijkheid goed naar voren komen. Mijn nieuwsgierigheid naar wat ik te zien krijg van de vrouwen staat voorop. Vanuit verwondering en gedachteloosheid probeer ik dat moment te pakken wat tot ontroering of verwondering stemt en een spiegel kan vormen voor de toeschouwer. Naast dat ik een portret van ze maak laat ik ook de vrouwen op kleine papiertjes woorden en zinnen schrijven. Dit kunnen geheimen zijn maar ook verlangens, belangrijke gebeurtenissen of kleine details van hun leven. Aan elke foto ga ik een muziekstuk koppelen. Deze worden gemaakt door verschillende professionele muzikanten, componisten en geluidskunstenaars die ik één van de foto’s van de vrouwen voorleg om iets op of voor te maken.
